Hair today…
…gone tomorrow!
Ever since I started growing body hair I’ve endeavoured to remove it, even before it became fashionable!
There’s just something I love about being smooth,
It’s cleaner looking and more sensual to the touch.
You wouldn’t not cut your hair or trim/shave your beard so why should downstairs be any different?
Many guys are choosing prune their pits, pubes and posterior for a more athletic look, so I’ll be looking at a few of the pros and cons of different methods to banish that bush!
Shaving
The simplest and quickest way to shave is by using a razor with a disposable blade. This method is cheap, quick and effective and suitable for larger areas such as your legs and torso. An easy addition to your regular routine; start by trimming any longer hairs then softening the skin with a warm shower.
Shaving in the direction of growth especially on the first pass will help to avoid cuts and nicks and also avoid encouraging ingrowing hairs that can later cause shaving rash and spotty skin, shaving against the direction of growth will shave closer but may leave you susceptible to ingrowing hairs so not so suited to sensitive skin.
Of course you are dealing with a very sharp blade, so use extreme care around your privates. I don’t recommended this technique for your balls or hard to reach areas!
The downside of this approach is the regular upkeep required as you are only removing the hair above the skin, this can quickly result in itchy stubble and sometimes shaving rash. The use of a shaving cream and after-balm will help reduce redness and rehydrate your skin. I apply a little tea tree oil as I find the antiseptic quality is beneficial to preventing shaving rash.
Exfoliating your skin using a special brush or pad with a rough textured surface a couple of days after shaving is a great tip to reduce ingrowing hairs and the lumps and bumps that sometimes appear a few days after a close shave.
Thankfully companies have caught onto the demand for manscaping products and electric body hair trimers make the job quicker and safer than a manual razor and leave your skin less prone to razor rash.
My personal recommendation is the Philips One Blade for a quick, safe, job even on the balls.
Depilatory creams
A good alternative to shaving is using a cream formulated to dissolve the hair away. This method is relatively quick and easy and keeps you smoother for longer, the downside - it can be a little pungent and messy and more expensive than shaving.
Companies such as Nads and Veet have produce products specifically designed to tackle tougher male hair growth with some especially formulated for your intimate areas.
Simply spread the cream onto the skin, leave for the recommended time (usually about 10 minutes) then, starting with the area you first applied, wipe off, along with the offending hairs.
Once regrowth comes through after a few days it should be finer, so skin should be less prone to ingrown hairs, although not always completely so minimise the chances by exfoliating the skin a few days after treatment.
If you have sensitive skin always try a test patch first before you smother yourself!
Laser Hair Removal
I am often asked how I achieve my level of smoothness, laser technology is my secret!
It works by using short pulses of light to weaken or destroy the hair root, resulting in a permanent or long lasting reduction in hair growth.
Hair that does regrow is usually finer, meaning skin is much less affected by rashes or itchy stubble and feels amazingly smooth to the touch!
If you’re looking to get serious about smoothness there are many clinics offering this technique, although it’s by no means a cheap option. Luckily however there are now affordable devices available to use in the convenience and privacy of your own home.
Devices fall into two categories; Laser and IPL (intense pulsed light).
Typically laser hair removers such as the one I use from Triabeauty
have a small treatment area meaning it can be time consuming on larger areas, although once an area is fully treated those results are likely to be longer lasting.
IPL (intense pulsed light) machines, of which I’m a recent convert to, have a much larger treatment window meaning areas such as the legs can be treated much quicker although overall more treatments are usually required to become permanently hair free as it uses a much broader light spectrum.
Both methods require time and commitment, however the long term benefits are most definitely worth it!

Phillips IPL hair removal device
Treatment works best on pale skin with dark hairs, (It’s not recommended to use either device on very dark skin).
Firstly shaving hairs to skin level then place the appliance on clean skin to activate the laser.
The device will emit a short burst of light, destroying or weakening the root (sometimes a brief hot stinging sensation may be felt), then simply move the device slightly and repeat until the required area has been covered.
As Individual hairs have different stages of growth, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, typically treating an area once every few weeks to capture all the hairs in the required growing cycle.
As regrowth subsides you’ll be able to reduce the treatments, just topping up if and when needed.
I now use only a couple of times a year to keep myself ultra-smooth!
Although the manufacturer does not recommend use on the genitals, I’ve had no issues using this method on my pubic region, if used with care on the lower settings first due to the more sensitive nature of the skin in this area.
Although the more expensive method of hair removal, overall I still think it offers the best value vs results, and time saving in the long run. Check out ebay as you can often pick up second hand machines in great condition for half the price of a new one.
